Cardboard Boxes

Corrugated cardboard boxes or corrugated carton is by far the most common form packaging. It has kept and is improving its pre-eminent position because of many factors, including its Versatility; High Strength and Low Weight Characteristics; Product Containment and Protection Features; Ready Adaption to a wide range of Production Techniques; Low Set Up and Tooling Costs; Low Storage and Handling Costs; Use of Renewable Resources and Suitability for Recycling and Suitability for Graphic Design. Corrugated cardboard boxes come in all shapes and sizes to suit your needs.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD BOX SIZING

Corrugated cardboard box dimensions are always measured by reference to the inside dimensions of the corrugated box and are expressed in the sequence of length, width and depth (also called height).

The length is always the larger of the two dimensions of the open face (flap opening); the width is the smaller. The depth is always the distance perpendicular to the length and width.

TYPES OF CORRUGATED FLUTES
Corrugated board used for cardboard boxes is generally made in four flute sizes A, C, B, and E. The "Flute" describes the structure of the wave-shaped cardboard material that makes up a board's corrugation.

Flute
Nominal Thickness
Comments
A
4.7mm

- excellent stacking strength

C
3.6mm
- good stacking strength
- good crush resistance
- very common grade
B
2.5mm
- good puncture resistance
- less space consumed in warehouse
- uses: canned goods, displays
E
1.1mm
- light weight
- strong alternative to paperboard
- superior printing surface
- excellent for custom die cut boxes
- uses: displays, point of purchase boxes

TYPES OF BOARD
According to its construction, corrugated board is classified into:

Board made from one layer of fluting and one liner - called "single-faced corrugated board" or "single-faced rolls". Single faced rolls are commonly used for wrapping uneven objects and as separating pads.

Board made from one layer of fluting sandwiched between two liners is called "single wall". Different flutes can be used depending upon strength required.

Board made from two layers of fluting sandwiched between three liners is called "twin cushion" or "double-wall" corrugated board. Different flutes may be combined in twin cushion board. Twin cushion should be used when stronger boxes and extra padding are needed. Excellent for stacking heavy items.

Three layers of fluting sandwiched between four liners is called "triple wall" or "triwall". Again different flutes may be combined to form triple wall board. Triple wall cardboard boxes are the strongest and most crush resistant boxes to use for storage and transit.
